ARCHIBLOK 2025

Can a city learn from its own mistakes? And if so – does the third time really turn out best?

In my presentation, “Third Time’s the Charm? How Nordhavn – Copenhagen’s (Almost) Perfect District – Was Created”, I trace a process in which the city step by step draws lessons from earlier decisions.

Key highlights included:

  • Looking at three Copenhagen districts — Ørestad, Sluseholmen, and finally Nordhavn — I explore the evolution of urban planning thinking:
from ambitious (but not always successful) assumptions, through adjustments and reflection, to a district built on adaptation, innovation, and sustainability.

  • This is a story about long-term planning, public–private partnerships, and designing the city as a continuous learning process rather than a finished product.

  • Is an “almost perfect” district the result of luck? Or of consistently drawing conclusions and improving over time?
